It felt like I earned my way into a room I wasn't supposed to enter.

When he started recruiting, he couldn't even tell investment banking, consulting, and S&T apart. The early mock interviews were rough — he got taken apart on "tell me about yourself," of all things, which his mentor bluntly called disorganized and hard to follow. So they rebuilt it. The new version tied his background and his competitive debate experience back to why investment banking made sense for him. What really got to him, though, was how much the mentors cared: blunt feedback when he needed it, patience with every question, a reply at 2 a.m. when he was spiraling. The offer, when it came, felt earned.
What One Strategy Group Did
- Tore down and rebuilt his "tell me about yourself" into a coherent narrative
- Tied his background and debate experience to his interest in investment banking
- Gave honest feedback and stayed reachable throughout, even at odd hours
